Ludovik Kendi graduated from the Gheorghe Dima National Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca, as a student of Alexandu Farcas and Gheorghe Mogosan. Later, he continued his studies in Florence with Erasmus programme. He obtained his master's degree in 2007 at the Mozarteum in Salzburg under the guidance of Boris Bakow and Horiana Branisteanu. Since then, he has attended masterclasses with Oskar Hillebrandt, Corneliu Murgu, Peter Dvorsky, and Nicolae Herlea, among others.


He was the winner of the Hariclea Darclée International Singing Contest in 2003 and the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg International Singing Contest in 2006. In 2012, he won the Slovak critics' award as 'Best Singer of the Season' for his role in Nabucco at the National Theatre Košice, and in 2015, he was named 'Best Verdi Performer of the Season' as Count Luna. In 2017, he became ’Best Verdi Performer of the Season’ for his performance as Rigoletto.


In addition to the great romantic and bel canto roles, his repertoire also includes baroque and contemporary works. Nikolaus Schapfl will use his voice as reference for the title role in the opera Caravaggio.


Among others, he sang in productions of Teatro Comunale Adria, Teatro Verdi Firenze, Concertgebouw and Teater Carre (Amsterdam), Odeon Theatre (Vienna), Festspielhaus (Salzburg), Seebühne (Bregenz), Tiroler Festspiele (Erl), Opera House in Doha (Qatar), as well as in Shanghai, Taipei, Beijing, Osaka, National Theatre Košice, National Theatre Ostrava, Cluj-Napoca Romanian National Opera and Hungarian Opera. His title roles include: Nabucco, Gianni Schicchi, Rigoletto, Jago, Macbeth, Tonio, and Valentin. He performed the role of Figaro from The Barber of Seville 206 times in 4 languages, all over Europe and the Far East. He made his debut in Hungary in 2017, playing the role of the Photographer in Tamás Beischer-Matyó’s opera, Kreatív kapcsolatok (Creative Connections), a co-production of the Bartók Plusz Opera Festival and the Budapest Operetta Theatre. The opera was directed by Kriszta Székely.

Also in 2017, he sang the role of Valentin in Gounod's Faust at the Szeged National Theatre. In the Szentendre Teátrum, he made an introduction, playing the main role Figaro from The Barber of Sevilla. In the summer of 2018, he sang the title role of Rigoletto in the Szeged Open-Air Festival. In 2020, he played a role in Haendel’s Agrippina in Szeged.

He sang two roles (Biberach and Petur) with great success in the festive Bánk Bán production (directed by Attila Vidnyánszky) during the summer of 2020 on Margaret Island, and all over the country.


In addition to opera productions, he is also a regular performer of oratorical performances. His repertoire consists of solo roles such as Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Mass in B minor and Christmas Oratorio, Orff’s Carmina Burana, W. A. Mozart’s Requiem, Brahms’ A German Requiem, Haydn’s Nelson Mass and The Seven Last Words of Christ, as well as Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Mahler’s Symphony No. 8.


During his career, he worked with acclaimed directors such as Kai Kunze, Gustav Kuhn, Silviu Purcarete, Wolfgang Kolneder, Jiri Menzel, Milos Forman, Philipp Harnoncourt, and in Hungary with Kriszta Székely, Géza Bodolay, Máté Szabó, and János Szikora.
